Impact Africa Network (IAN) is a nonprofit startup studio (US 501(c)3) based in Nairobi on a mission to ensure young, talented Africans have a chance at participating in the digital transformation of Africa as creators and owners

We provide Innovation Fellowships to talented college graduates, providing them the opportunity to work on well-vetted ideas with like-minded peers, positioning them at the frontlines of the innovation economy. 

The vision is by 2030 to develop 10 scaled-ups, that provide 10K jobs with a combined value of $10B as a portfolio. Out of this will image 1000 Innovation Leaders equipped with the mindset, skills, networks and resources needed to transform our society, we call it the ‘1000 Lee Kuan Yews’

Job Summary

We are looking for an experienced and strategic HR professional to lead our people and culture function. As the HR Manager, you will be a key advisor to leadership and an architect of people systems that foster innovation, performance, and purpose.

This role is ideal for someone who thrives in entrepreneurial, fast-paced environments and is passionate about using their HR expertise to scale teams, build culture, and drive meaningful impact.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership

  • Partner with leadership to shape and implement HR strategies aligned with our long-term organisational objectives
  • Lead workforce planning, organisational design, and change management initiatives
  • Provide HR counsel and leadership coaching to department heads and team leads

Talent Management

  • Strengthen onboarding, performance management, and employee lifecycle systems to support excellence and retention
  • Support learning & development initiatives tailored to both operational teams and innovation fellows
  • Support the talent acquisition processes, with a focus on attracting purpose-driven, high-performing individuals

Culture & Engagement

  • Champion a values-driven, inclusive, and innovative culture
  • Build and facilitate programs that promote engagement, psychological safety, and team cohesion
  • Design internal communications and feedback systems that enhance transparency and trust

HR Operations & Compliance

  • Ensure full compliance with Kenyan labour laws, US nonprofit employment guidelines (as applicable), and HR best practices
  • Manage compensation, benefits, leave, and wellness policies
  • Establish and maintain efficient HR systems and data reporting tools

Organizational Development

  • Guide the evolution of people systems in a hybrid environment for contractors and fellows
  • Lead diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives that reflect our mission
  • Support impact measurement around team development and leadership outcomes

Required Qualifications

  • 8+ years of progressive HR experience, including senior-level responsibility in people strategy and operations
  • Proven ability to build and scale HR systems in startups, NGOs, or hybrid organizations
  • Experience working in mission-driven and cross-cultural environments
  • Deep understanding of HR compliance, labor law, and risk management in Kenya; exposure to U.S. nonprofit operations a plus
  • Strong leadership presence and ability to influence across all levels
  • High emotional intelligence, discretion, and a collaborative mindset
  • Proficiency with digital HR tools and platforms
